Special notice

In view of the latest situation of COVID-19 and uncertainties in global business travels, along with discussions with our tour presenters, performing venues and related partners, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra’s (HK Phil) tour to Japan and Korea, originally have been rescheduled to a later time of the year, now has been cancelled.

The HK Phil, Music Director Jaap van Zweden, our Board of Governors as well as the administration put the health and well-being of our audience, players and staff at the forefront of our priorities. We sincerely hope that the orchestra’s home city, as well as other parts of the world, will recover soon and overcome the current challenging situation. The orchestra and its Music Director Jaap van Zweden look forward to performing for audiences in Japan and Korea in the near future.

The HK Phil would like to thank our tour presenters in Japan and Korea, our performing venue partners, as well as sponsors, for their support.

Application Requirements

  1. Aged 25 or under as of 31 August 2020.

  2. Permanent Hong Kong resident of Chinese ethnicity.

  3. Proof of enrolment (admission confirmation) in an overseas university/music conservatory for the 2020/21 academic year.
  4. Scholarship recipients are expected to return to Hong Kong and serve in the music field upon completion of study.

 

Additional Documents for Different Areas of Studies

Apart from the required documents on the application form, please submit the required material below based on the applied course:

 

Conducting
  1. Please submit a 10 to 15-minute video of you conducting three contrasting pieces, in USB or DVD format.
  2. Applicants are required to have their faces shown in their conducting performance video, and the video should start from the beginning with no cuts or other editing.

* Conducting performance video can be orchestral, ensemble and piano.

 

Composition
  1. Please submit a portfolio containing the scores of three pieces of your own composition in two hard copies.
  2. Please include audio-recordings of the submitted pieces, in USB or DVD format.

 

Other Music Related Studies
  1. Please submit one hard copy of your three submitted essay / thesis.

 

Audition and Interview

Selected applicants will be invited to an audition and interview.

 

Overseas Applicants

Overseas applicants who are not able to attend the audition and interview in Hong Kong, are required to submit the following items in addition to your application form and list of related documents above. Please note that applicants are required to have your face shown in the performance video, and the video should start from the beginning with no cuts or other editing.

 

Performance
  1. A 10 to 15-minute performance video with short self-introduction.

  2. A 2-minute video personal statement.

* Please submit the above items in the same USB or DVD.

 

Conducting / Composition and other music related studies
  1. A 2-minute video personal statement with a short self-introduction in USB or DVD format.
