Special notice


In view of the latest situation of COVID-19 and uncertainties in global business travels, along with discussions with our tour presenters, performing venues and related partners, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra’s (HK Phil) tour to Japan and Korea, originally have been rescheduled to a later time of the year, now has been cancelled.

The HK Phil, Music Director Jaap van Zweden, our Board of Governors as well as the administration put the health and well-being of our audience, players and staff at the forefront of our priorities. We sincerely hope that the orchestra’s home city, as well as other parts of the world, will recover soon and overcome the current challenging situation. The orchestra and its Music Director Jaap van Zweden look forward to performing for audiences in Japan and Korea in the near future.

The HK Phil would like to thank our tour presenters in Japan and Korea, our performing venue partners, as well as sponsors, for their support.

  1. Applicants are required to prepare three contrasting pieces, each about 5 minutes long.
  2. Applicants are required to bring their own instruments to the audition, except for the piano.
  3. Applicants are required to prepare two original copies of the music scores to the interview.
  4. Please bring your own accompanist (if required).



  1. Applicants should prepare a pre-recorded 10 to 15-minute video of you conducting three contrasting pieces, in USB or DVD format to the audition.
  2. Applicants are required to include a short self-introduction before the performance in the video.
  3. Applicants are required to have their faces shown in their conducting performance video, and the video should start from the beginning with no cuts or other editing.

* Conducting applicants may include conducting performances with orchestras or small chamber groups.



  1. Applicants are required to prepare two hard copies of the submitted three pieces to the interview.
  2. Applicants are required to prepare an audio-recording of the submitted works, to be played during the interview.


Other Music-related Studies

  1. Applicants are required to prepare three submitted essays / theses to the interview.
  2. Applicants are required to prepare notes on the new research topic to the interview.
