Its triumphal première took place barely a fortnight before Tchaikovsky’s tragic death, and many have identified in its heartbreaking finale a powerful premonition of his own demise. For his part, Tchaikovsky flatly refused to explain what the underlying message of his Sixth Symphony was. Come and find the answers to these mysteries as the HKPO and Maestro de Waart preface their performance of one of the greatest examples of late-Romantic music with other works in which death and love go hand-in-hand along with searing beauty and stirring emotions.
