Since founding the Bach Collegium Japan in 1990, Masaaki Suzuki has become one of the most inspirational conductors of 18th Century music. The New York Times applauded “a subtle ear for color, a keen sense of harmonic direction and an ability to make phrases breathe and rhythms live.” One of Haydn’s darkest symphonies, No.44 belongs to a small group of minor-key symphonies dating from the 1770s. Brooding undercurrents are swept aside in Mendelssohn’s sunny and exuberant Italian symphony which culminates in a footstomping tarantella.
