Programme
Congratulations to maestro Jaap van Zweden for receiving Musical America Conductor of the Year award
Prokofiev's glorious Fifth Symphony is one of the most life-affirming and enchanting works to have come out of 20th century Russia. When Jaap van Zweden directed it with his orchestra in Dallas, the American critics were generous with their praise; "Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 was full of life in van Zweden’s interpretation".
For two consecutive weeks in November, van Zweden will be bringing his much praised musical insight to the HKPO with concerts which reflect his own personal tastes.
For the second he juxtaposes Prokofiev's Fifth with another orchestral gem, Britten's Violin Concerto, in which the soloist will be another Dutch marvel, Simone Lamsma. Already she has performed the Concerto with van Zweden and orchestras in The Netherlands and Dallas, so theirs is a partnership which promises to bring a real insight into this masterpiece conceived amidst the build up to war.
