To open the 20th anniversary season of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Edo de Waart has invited one of the world’s greatest sopranos at the height of her career to join him in the music of Wagner and Strauss. From the Metropolitan Opera in New York to London’s Covent Garden and Paris’s Opéra-Bastille, Deborah Voigt has excited frenzied reactions from audiences and critics in her portrayals of Wagner’s Isolde and Strauss’s Salome – two of the most demanding roles in the entire repertoire. Making her Hong Kong début, Deborah Voigt’s gleaming voice will light up the Concert Hall to open the 2009/10 season.

"She sent Strauss's lines soaring with gleaming tone and unforced
power. In one climactic moment, standing atop the prompter's box,
she capped a defiant outburst with a high C that, like some 'Star
Wars' light saber, threatened to slice the auditorium right down the
middle." |
