Tchaikovsky Festival: Joyce Yang’s Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1
Great Composers
Programme
The electrifying opening of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto
stands as one of the most famous pieces of classical music
ever written. Who better to switch on all its drama, passion
and intimacy than the pianist described as a “million-volt
stage-presence”? And alongside Joyce Yang, Maestro Edo
de Waart promises more supercharged action as he sets the
sparks flying in a Symphony which, as Tchaikovsky himself put
it, opens by depicting “Fate. The fatal force which prevents
our hopes of happiness from being realised... which, like the
Sword of Damocles, is suspended over the head and perpetually
poisons the soul”.
