The Battle of Titans

“Who is more important – the pianist or the orchestra?” This was the provocative question once posed by Leonard Bernstein to his audience, just before inviting the young Glenn Gould to join him on stage for an historic performance. It was a thrilling showdown between two intellectual giants: the grandeur of the orchestra versus the versatile power of the piano - a battle of equals in the world of classical music.

“Piano vs Orchestra”, conceived and performed by Hyung-ki Joo, is a unique and “infotaining” concert that explores the evolution of the piano’s role in the repertoire, from its humble origins to its prominent place in the orchestra. Through a combination of performance, storytelling, and humour, Joo takes audiences on a journey through musical history, illustrating how composers have turned the piano into both a rival and an ally to the orchestra.
