Programme
Everyone likes a good fairy tale. In this concert two collections are told in music. Legend has it that Maurice Ravel preferred to disappear from grown-up dinner parties, to be found later playing with children’s toys in the nursery. He channelled all his child-like wonder into his Mother Goose Suite, a collection of the best children’s tales, re-told in music.
Rimsky-Korsakov did the same for the Tales of the Arabian Nights, to compose Scheherazade. The beautiful and crafty princess of the title tells one beguiling tale after another to charm a cruel sultan – we guarantee you’ll be charmed as well.
“I was a rascal,” says Hong Xu, “Sometimes I would watch television at the same time as I practised and I would get a terrible pain in my neck from craning to see the screen. But my father soon caught on… he would come home and feel the top of the set to see if it was still warm!” Hong Xu has fashioned a glittering career for himself, and joins us to perform Mozart’s refreshing Jeunehomme concerto – in which Mozart’s fully-formed genius takes flight.
