Programme
East-meets-West with Yo-Yo Ma
Cello master Yo-Yo Ma returns to the HK Phil’s stage to perform Elgar’s deeply moving Cello Concerto. The programme also includes Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March no. 1 – whose melody is used in Land of Hope and Glory, the must-sing song in the BBC Proms – and Vaughan Williams’s English Folk Song Suite. Chen Qigang studied under Olivier Messiaen in his youth, his work Instants d'un Opéra de Pékin draws on traditional Peking Opera elements and integrates orchestral techniques, creating a deeply textured soundscape woven with the colours of Peking Opera music.
The concert runs approximately 1 hour 40 minutes with an intermission.
