Gennadi Rozhdestvensky has been a towering figure in Russian music for half a century, a hero in his homeland and a muchloved artist on the concert platforms of the world. His affinity with the music of Shostakovich, evidenced by the Western première of the scandalous Fourth Symphony in 1962 and his fabled complete recording of all 15 symphonies, brings profound personal experience to the smoldering, violent and ultimately exuberant Tenth Symphony, written in the year of Stalin’s death. His son Sasha has captivated audiences in Russia, throughout Europe and across the US with his elegant playing, enhanced by an exquisite 1734 Guarneri del Gesu.
