Zhang Haochen made his début at the age of five in his native Shanghai. Seven years later he became the youngestever winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition of Young Musicians, and in 2009 the youngest participant and the first Chinese recipient to be awarded the Gold Medal at the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The first female ever to be awarded the Herbert von Karajan Conducting Fellowship, Carolyn Kuan, is described as “one of the most exciting, innovative and outstanding conductors of her generation”. Hear these two members of the new generation of musicians perform a programme of well-established Russian classics.
