Maestro van Zweden and the HK Phil begin an epic two-year exploration of Mahler’s symphonies. The journey starts tonight with the composer’s First Symphony—“a sound of nature,” as he himself described it. Often nicknamed “Titan,” it’s so big that it requires augmented orchestral forces. Watch for seven horn players—standing—with the bells of their instruments turned up, proclaiming the breathtaking, jubilant finale. Offering the perfect foil to Mahler, Tianwa Yang (“heart-meltingly beautiful…impeccable technique.” BBC Music Magazine) captures Mozart in full compositional flower … his Fourth Violin Concerto, graceful and lyrical. Mahler and Mozart—an inspired pairing.
