In Peter Schaffer’s play Amadeus, the composer Salieri tries to describe Mozart’s Gran Partita, “This was a music I’d never heard… It seemed to me that I was hearing the very voice of God.” Jaap van Zweden has chosen the Gran Partita, putting the wind virtuosi of the HK Phil centre stage. Alongside this great chamber work, Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony, featuring the string section of the HK Phil, the composer’s heartfelt tribute to the victims of fascism and of war.
