Dvorák’s Cello Concerto
Simply Classic
Programme
It’s one of the most gorgeous concertos ever written. Brahms
said of it, “Had I known it was possible to write a cello
concerto as beautiful as this, I’d have written one myself”. The
Argentinean cellist, Sol Gabetta, gives her interpretation of
Dvorák’s warm, lyrical and genuinely lovely work. In a totally
different mood – it has been described as depicting “a toy shop
at night” – the last of Shostakovich’s symphonies is crammed
full of clever musical quotations including Rossini’s William Tell and Wagner’s Ring, not to mention countless self-quotations, making it an amazingly colourful potpourri of memorable
moments.
