A major musical anniversary this Season is the centenary of
the death of Gustav Mahler. The tragic Sixth uses the biggest
orchestra he ever employed (including cow-bells, birch-twigs
and, most dramatically, a sledge-hammer) yet contains his
most intimate and deeply felt thoughts. Its programme tells
of nothing other than the hopes and ambitions of the young,
recently-married composer, and how they are ultimately
thwarted by the inevitability of Fate. Hear this most powerful
and awe-inspiring of symphonies under the baton of renowned
Mahler interpreter Edo de Waart.
