As China celebrates the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the People’s Republic, the best known Chinese concerto celebrates 50 years since its première in 1959. In honour of the Concerto’s 50th birthday, the young Chinese composer Huang Ruo takes thematic fragments and places them in a contemporary, minimalist context, creating a perfect curtain-raiser to this classic of the Chinese orchestral repertoire. Indonesian-born Chinese conductor Jahja Ling has forged an impressive career in the United States and in this Hong Kong visit, he will conduct Dvorák’s ebullient Symphony No.8.
