Sophia Chan
Young violinist Sophia Chan has displayed tremendous talents in music since four years old. Under the tutelage of Nie Bing, the China national first class performer and the vice-president of musician association, she starts to display remarkable talents in Music. She is a student under Professor Michael Ma, the Head of Strings at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She is now also studying with, the world’s top violinist and Professor of Violin at the Curtis Institute of Music, Mr Shmuel Ashkenasi. She has received music scholarships awarded by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in the past two years. She has won numerous awards for her performances, and was given the title “young genius violinist”.
Although she is only 11 years old, she is already a veteran violin performer on stage. In 2006, amazed by her outstanding achievements, the Chinese central television 1 (CCTV-1) elected her as the “young star of the future “and performed live on TV in Beijing. In 2007, Sophia travelled with the Shenzhen Children’s Orchestra to Germany and competed in the Youth Art festival, her performance has been awarded the gold award. In 2009, Sophia performed a violin solo with Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in the “Hong Kong Phil and Friends Fundraising Concert”, which was taken place at the Hong Kong cultural centre concert hall. In 2010, she performed as the lead violinist Universiade 2011 one year countdown ceremony alongside the world famous pianist Lang Lang, live in front of 50,000 audiences at the Shenzhen sports stadium. Her performance on stage is well received by the audiences and the media, which is reported on the front page on a number of national newspapers. On November 26th 2010, she is invited to be the only special performer for the opening of 2010 BOAO youth forum held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Impressed by her extraordinary performance, the Hong Kong Commercial Daily conducted an exclusive interview with her in the following day.
In January 2011, Sophia is invited by Alex Klein, the world renowned conductor and music director of the Sao Paulo Opera House, as a special performer, representing China, to perform at Festival de Musica de Santa Catarina (FEMUSC) 2011 in Brazil. During the 2011 FEMUSC, Sophia also played the second violin in a Quintet with Leon Spierer as the first violin. Her performances received high praise from Brazil’s government officials, celebrity and audiences. More than 20 newspapers and magazines have covered her excellent performances. She has also successfully recorded her first personal violin album with the Grammy award classical producer Gregory Squires in January 2011. Recently she is invited to perform for the celebration of 140th anniversary celebration of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals in Hong Kong. In 9th April 2011, Sophia will perform with Hilary Hahn and the English Chamber Orchestra at Shenzhen Concert Hall.
