For 70 years, Vienna has celebrated the New Year with a joyous concert of waltzes, polkas and marches composed by the ultimate Viennese band-leader Johann Strauss Jr and his contemporaries, performed in the gilded magnificence of the Musikverein. To pop the cork on 2010, Viennese conductor Johannes Wildner recreates the very first Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s concert conducted by Clemens Krauss which started a tradition in which Strauss waltzes and champagne mix in a perfect cocktail of good cheer.
