Programme

BRAHMSVariations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn, op. 56a
Dani HOWARDCello Concerto (World Premiere, HK Phil Co-commission)
STRAUSSAlso sprach Zarathustra, op. 30

Inspired by the great philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem Also sprach Zarathustra has become one of the most well-known pieces of classical music, particularly following its iconic use in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. German conductor Michael Sanderling returns to lead the HK Phil as the programme also features the world premiere of the Cello Concerto by Hong Kong-born British composer Dani Howard, co-commissioned by the HK Phil and performed by Principal Cello Richard Bamping.

The concert runs approximately 1 hour 30 minutes with an intermission.
