Since 2005, Edo de Waart has been leading the annual collaboration project with HKAPA, bringing the Academy music students the opportunity to perform six ambitious programmes including John Adams, Metamorphosis, Mahler’s 5th, Rite of Spring, and the Alpine Symphony. This year, he will coach them in the richly challenging music of Richard Wagner. De Waart’s affinity for this music has been acclaimed from Bayreuth and Amsterdam to Beijing and Sydney.
In this annual collaboration between the Philharmonic and the Academy, leading students sit side-by-side with seasoned professionals to gain a hands-on experience of professional orchestral life. After a series of coaching and rehearsals, the joint orchestra will perform at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre concert hall, when De Waart hands the baton to his brilliant young Assistant Conductor Perry So for Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde as well as Stravinsky’s vibrant and colourful Firebird.
