Programme

MahlerSymphony No.3

Edo de Waart's cycle of Mahler symphonies has provided landmarks in his tenure as Artistic Director, with triumphant performances of the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Symphonies. The massive Third Symphony is a major undertaking adding a women's chorus, a children's chorus and a solo mezzo soprano to a vastly expanded orchestra. Searching and philosophical, this gigantic score reaches its profoundly moving climax with a luminous and transcendent adagio. Glorious American mezzo soprano Nancy Maultsby can effortlessly fill the concert hall with the most hushed pianissimo, giving weight and meaning to Nietzsche's thoughtful text.
