Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra Concert
Programme
An All-Mahler Programme
Des Knaben Wunderhorn: Des Antonius von Padua Fischpredigt, Der Tamboursg’sell, Rheinlegendchen, Trost im Unglück
Symphony No. 7
With its dark and brooding first movement, its middle movements – sometimes described as “a symphony within the symphony” – magically evoking night-time, and the explosion of light in the outrageously exuberant finale, complete with references to popular operas of the day, Mahler's Seventh Symphony is often regarded as one of his more puzzling creations. But, with the peerless interpreter Maestro Edo de Waart at the helm, we can be assured of a safe passage through Mahler's music's many marvels. Chinese bass-baritone, Shen Yang, winner of the 2007 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Prize, shines in a selection from one of Mahler's most enchanting orchestral song-cycles.
