MendelssohnA Midsummer Night’s Dream: suite
WaltonHenry V
The histories, tragedies and comedies of William Shakespeare have
inspired composers since the 17th Century. Mendelssohn’s exquisitely
delicate touch sets the scene for the nocturnal playfulness of
Shakespeare’s most entertaining comedy. In 1944, against the background
of the Second World War, Laurence Olivier directed and starred in an
uplifting and patriotic film of Henry V for which William Walton created
a rousing orchestral score. The concert version of the film music tells the
story with cinematic flourish, encompassing the tenderness of farewell,
the piteous death of Falstaff and the exhilaration of battle and victory.
About Henry V
"It is the most wonderful music I've ever heard for a film" Laurence Olivier
This is a vigorous story about one of England's most charismatic kings, Henry V, who put aside his wild youth to lead his nation to victory in a heroic battle. Told through the timeless writings of Shakespeare and the masterful music by William Walton, the man regarded as England's most important living composer, this concert version is a perfect marriage of literature and music.
The upcoming performance star Samuel West (Critics' Circle Award – Best Shakespearian Performance for Hamlet, BAFTA award and Oscar nomination for Howards End) and the Hong Kong Philharmonic, lead by its music director and world-renowned conductor, Maestro Edo de Waart.
"(Shakespeare's) collected works would always be under my pillow if I was only ever allowed one book to keep, and who never bores me."
