Combining Western and Chinese music, The Butterfly Lovers and The Yellow River are two of the most respected Chinese orchestral works in the international music scene. Following the hugely popular “Bravo! China” in season 2005/06, the HKPO will perform The Yellow River in another Chinese music showcase under the baton of Edo de Waart. The concerto is an adaptation of Xian Xinghai’s The Yellow River Cantata, composed during the second World War to strengthen the people’s resolve against Japanese invasion, and uses the grand Yellow River to symbolise the heroic spirit of the Chinese people. Another highlight of the evening is the performance of Galloping War-Horses, composed by erhu legend Chen Yaoxing. The piece utilises various erhu techniques to portray the incredible spectacle of a battlefield. The Yellow River features Yingdi Sun, First Prize winner at the 7th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition, while Galloping War-Horses will be performed by the composer’s son Chen Jun, hailed as the “Paganini of Erhu”.
