Born in Beijing, Zhang Yao graduated from Beijing Dance Academy in 1999, before joining the coveted National Ballet of China. He was promoted to Principal Dancer in 2003. In 2004, he joined The Hong Kong Ballet as a Senior Soloist and was promoted to Principal Dancer in 2005. Zhang Yao is the winner of Silver Medal at the 2002 Varna International Ballet Competition, and received the Career Outstanding Contribution Award from the Cultural Ministry of China.
Zhang has been invited to perform around the world, including performances at the Varna International Ballet Competition in 2004, the Vail International Dance Festival in Colorado, United States in 2005, the Charity Gala Dancing for AIDS Orphans at the Seishonen Centre in Yokohama, Japan in 2007 and at the Prague Ballet Gala in the Czech Republic in 2008. He has danced principal roles in Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, The Merry Widow and participated in Summer Delights for Expo 2010 in Shanghai.
