Jimmy Shiu

Jimmy Shiu graduated with distinction from Hong Kong Baptist College, majoring in composition. He obtained his master’s degree in composition and singing from the University of Sheffield, UK. Before retirement, he was a veteran arts administrator. From 1988 to 1994, he served as Audience Development Manager at the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil).

As a fervent music lover, Jimmy is keen to share the joy of music with others. He has given numerous talks for various organisations including the Hong Kong Arts Centre, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and the HK Phil. Occasionally, he also appears in concerts as host or narrator.

Several of his books on music appreciation have been published. which include two books celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the HK Phil (Traditional Chinese version by Humming Publishing, 2024; English version named HK Phil 50+ by Hong Kong University Press, 2025). The two books not only mark the orchestra’s jubilee as a professional performance body, but also cover its pre-professional days, going as far back as the days of its predecessor: the Sino-British Orchestra. The Simplified Chinese version will be released soon.

A lover of sacred music, Jimmy’s other publications include collections of his original and arranged hymns.
