Feng Tianshi
Feng Tianshi, Chinese bamboo (Dizi) flautist, is a winner of the Gold Prize from the "WenHua" Grand Chinese Instruments Competition organised by the China Ministry of Culture for solo performance and chamber music performance. She is currently a teacher at the Central Conservatory of Music while pursuing her Doctoral degree, studying Dizi under Professor Yuan Feifan.
Tianshi began studying dizi with her grandfather Zhiping Wei at the age of 5, and then enrolled in the middle school of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing in 2004. She went on to the Central Conservatory for her undergraduate study in 2010. She was recommended as a graduate student in 2014 due to her academic excellence. She studied under Professor Dai Ya and Yuan Feifan, and also the national dizi master, Wang Cheng.
In 2022, she toured with Long Yu and the China Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring Zhao Lin’s Symphonic Picture: A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains, which was co-commissioned by over twenty orchestras in China. In 2024 Tianshi played Hao Weiya’s Concerto for dizi and orchestra, Blooming in the Spring, at the Chinese New Year’s Concert of Bard College at both the college and at Lincoln Center, New York. She has been a featured soloist, touring China with orchestras and famed conductors including Long Yu, Zhang Guoyong, Huang Yi, Huan Jing and Yang Yang. Orchestras she has worked with include the China Philharmonic Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Kunming Nie Er Symphony Orchestra and many more.
