Originally from Scotland, Douglas joined the trumpet section of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in 1999.
Early orchestral experience came from the local youth orchestra, Perth Youth Orchestra and he also attended the junior department of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, studying with Brian Forshaw. Undertaking undergraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, his professors included John Miller, Paul Cosh and Anne McAneney. Following graduation he returned to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) for postgraduate performance studies.
He was a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra, under maestros Bernard Haitink and Sir Colin Davis, before moving to Hong Kong.
Away from the trumpet he is involved in sailing and enjoys riding motorcycles.
