Angela Chan
Praised for her sensitivity and remarkable tone, Hong Kong-born violinist Angela Chan has established herself as a compelling soloist and chamber musician. She is the winner of the 2024 Hannover Joseph Joachim Violin Competition, where she also received the prize for the best interpretation of the commissioned work. Additionally, she was awarded first prize and the best interpretation of concerto prize at the 2017 Louis Spohr Violin Competition and is a laureate of both the Singapore International Violin Competition and the Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition.
As the founder and violinist of the AYA Piano Trio, she has performed in renowned chamber music series across the U.S., including Concerts International of Memphis, the Schneider Concert Series, Chamber Music Tulsa, and the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts. Angela is rapidly emerging as one of the most distinctive and polished violinists of her generation.
As a soloist, she has performed with esteemed orchestras such as the NDR Radiophilharmonie, the Staatskapelle Weimar, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the China Philharmonic. In 2016, she was selected as a soloist for a U.S. tour with the Curtis Chamber Orchestra. She has given recitals in major cities, including Boston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Rome, Milan, Hong Kong, and Beijing.
A dedicated chamber musician, Angela has collaborated with renowned artists such as Nobuko Imai, Ning Feng, Philip Setzer, Hsin-Yun Huang, Peter Wiley, Gary Hoffman and Marcy Rosen. Her festival appearances include the Heifetz International Music Institute as an Artist-in-Residence, the Verbier Festival Academy, and the Marlboro Music Festival.
Born in Hong Kong, Angela began playing the violin at the age of three under the guidance of her mother. She later studied with Michael James Ma at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Vera WeiLing Tsu in Beijing, and Shmuel Ashkenasi, Pamela Frank, and Aaron Rosand at the Curtis Institute of Music. She earned her master’s degree at the New England Conservatory of Music under Donald Weilerstein on a full scholarship. She is currently an Artist-in-Residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium, studying with Augustin Dumay.
Angela is the first recipient of the Music and Dance Distinguished Performance Commendation from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and a scholarship recipient of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund and the Lin Yao Ji Foundation.
Highlights of her 2025–26 season include debut appearances with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic, recital tours in Europe and the U.S., and the release of a debut album with the AYA Piano Trio.
