Anna Samuil

Internationally celebrated soprano is a principal soloist at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin where she sings parts such as Elisabetta Don Carlo, Mimi La Bohème, Violetta La Traviata, Miss Jessel  The Turn of the Screw and concerts of Beethoven IX with Barenboim in the annual New Year’s Eve Gala concert. Outside Berlin, her engagements include War Requiem with the Lorin Maazel at Munich’s Philharmonie am Gasteig, Verdi’s Requiem with Fabio Luisi at Dvoraks Prague Festival, Adele Die Fledermaus with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Rachmaninov’s The Bells at Konzerthaus Berlin and in Goteborg, Mimi at the Semper Oper Dresden and Freia Das Rheingold with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

 

Anna Samuil has appeared at Festivals and Opera Houses such as the Metropolitan Opera New York, Teatro alla Scala Milan, Salzburg Festival, Bunka Kaikan Tokyo, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Arena di Verona, Bolshoi Theatre Moscow, Opera de Vallonie Liege, Hamburgische Staatsoper, Berliner Staatsoper, Pittsburgh Opera, Opera National de Lyon, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Grand Theatre Luxembourg, Deutsche Staatsoper am Rhein Düsseldorf, La Monnaie Brussels, Teatro di Maestranza in Sevilla, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Baltimore Opera, Aix-en-Provence Festival, Verbier Festival, Edinburgh Festival, Kissinger Sommer Festival, Palau les Arts, Valencia, Pittsburgh Opera, Oslo Chamber Music Festival, Festival de Musique de La Reunion, Festival International du Colmar and the Rheingau Music Festival. In summer 2013 she appeared as Freia and Gutrune in Barenboim’s Ring at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.

 

Ms Samuil has worked extensively with conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Sir Neville Marriner, Zubin Mehta,
Antonio Pappano, Vladimir Jurowski, Gustavo Dudamel, Placido Domingo, Fabio Luisi and Philippe Jordan to name but a few.

She has also made various recordings including a CD of Britten’s War requiem with Sir Marriner, DVDs of Eugene Onegin with Barenboim which is also featured on "Best of 50 years of Grosses Fespielhaus Salzburg" (Deutsche Grammophon), a DVD of a new production of Don Giovanni from Glyndebourne with Jurowski (EMI) and a CD of Don Giovanni with Mehta and Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra (Helicon). Her latest recording of Beethoven IX with Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra has been released on the compilation Beethoven for all (Decca).

 

Ms Samuil is prize winner of numerous international singing competitions: "Mikhail Glinka"(Russia, 1st Prize), "Riccardo Zandonai" (Italy, 1st Prize),"Klaudia Taev"(Estonia, 1st prize), as well as the XII International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (2002, 3rd Prize), "Neue Stimmen" in Germany and "Franco Corelli" in Italy. In 2008 she was awarded the prestigious "Daphne Prize" as the best young theatrical performer in Berlin.

 

Born into a family of musicians, Anna Samuil first graduated from the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatoire as a violinist, then as an opera singer with a Diploma of Excellence, and in 2003 she completed her postgraduate studies with Professor Irina Arkhipova.

Ms Samuil made her first professional appearances at the Moscow Stanislavsky Theatre as Adina in L’Elisir d’Amore, Adele in Die Fledermaus and as Shemakh’s Queen in Le Coq d’Or. She made her European debut singing Violetta in La Traviata at the opening night of the 2003/04 season at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin with Barenboim, and has been principal soloist of the Deutsche Staatsoper ever since.

 

She has given recitals and concerts in Aix-en-Provence, Toulouse, Avignon, Brussels, Valladolid, Lisbon, Prague, Krakow, Wien, Dresden, Bayreuth, Izmir, St. Petersburg, Turin and continues to give recitals throughout Europe together with her husband Matthias Samuil.

Her roles include Carmen Micaëla, L'elisir d'amore Adina, Rusalka title role, Ruslan und Lyudmila, Lyudmila, Le nozze di Figaro La Contessa di Almaviva, Don Giovanni Donna Anna, Così fan tutte Fiordiligi, La Bohème Mimì, Die Fledermaus Rosalinde, Mazeppa Maria, Eugene Onegin Tatiana, Iolanta title role, Rigoletto Gilda, La Traviata Violetta, Falstaff Alice Ford, Lohengrin Elsa, Das Rheingold Freia and Meistersinger von Nürnberg Eva. Future repertoire will include War and Peace Natasha, Manon title (Massenet), Thaïs title, Faust Marguerite, Roméo et Juliette Juliette (Gounod), Otello Desdemona (Verdi), Il Trovatore Leonora, Simone Boccanegra Amelia, Luisa Miller title, Idomeneo Elettra, Titus Vittelia, Anna Bolena title, Il turco in Italia Fiorilla, Armida title and Les contes d’Hoffmann Antonia.

 

Ms Samuil’s concert repertoire includes Beethoven IX, Christus am Ölberge op.85, Concert Aria Ah, perfido! op.65, Britten War Requiem op.66, Händel Messiah HWV 56, Mahler Symphony No. 4G-Dur, Mozart Mass in c-minorl KV 427, Exsultate, jubilate KV 165 (158a), Requiem KV 626, Prokoviev Hamlet op.77, Rossini Petite Messesolennelle, Stabat Mater, Shostakovich 7  Romances after Alexander Blok op.127, Strauss 4 Last Songs, Tippett A Child of our Time and Verdi Reqiem.
