Classical Guitar Superstar Miloš Karadaglić Joins the HK Phil in the Most Famous Guitar Concerto of All Time – Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez (28&29 June)

[24 June 2013, Hong Kong] The fire and passion of Spain has inspired some of the most colourful music of all time; in the opera house, the theatre or the concert hall.

On 28&29 June, Hong Kong audience will have the opportunity to hear the most famous guitar concerto of all time – Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez - performed by guitar superstar Miloš Karadaglić. Under the baton of Portuguese conductor Joana Carneiro, the Hong Kong Philharmonic (HK Phil) will also perform a programme of Spanish-inspired works by Verdi, Falla and Rimsky-Korsakov.

“Miloš' Concierto de Aranjuez” will be held on 28&29 June (Fri & Sat), 8PM, in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. Tickets priced: $400, $300, $220, $140 are now available at URBTIX. Joana Carneiro, conductor [full biography]
Noted for her vibrant performances in a wide diversity of repertoire, Joana Carneiro has attracted considerable attention as one of the most outstanding young conductors today. In 2009 she was named Music Director of the Berkeley Symphony, succeeding Kent Nagano and becoming the third music director in the 40-year history of the orchestra. She currently serves as official guest conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra.

As a guest conductor, Ms Carneiro’s recent highlights have includes her débuts at the Cincinnati Opera, Detroit, Gothenburg and New Zealand symphonies as well as returns to the Toronto Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She opened the St Paul Chamber Orchestra’s season and led the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Renée Fleming as soloist.

A finalist of the prestigious 2002 Maazel-Vilar Conductor’s Competition, Carneiro has worked with Maestros Kurt Masur and Christoph von Dohnanyi, conducted the London Philharmonic (as one of three conductors chosen for London’s Allianz Cultural Foundation International Conductors Academy), served as Assistant Conductor of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and as Music Director of the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra of Los Angeles. From 2005 to 2008 she was an American Symphony Orchestra League Conducting Fellow at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where she worked with Esa-Pekka Salonen and led performances at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.

Miloš Karadaglić, guitar [full biography]
One of the biggest-selling classical discs of 2011, Miloš’ début album for Deutsche Grammophon topped the classical charts around the world and sold over 100,000 copies in less than six months. At the 2011 Gramophone Awards ceremony he won both the Young Artist of the Year and Specialist Classical Chart awards. His second album, Latino, was released in June 2012.  His appearances last year included recitals at London’s Wigmore Hall, the Théatre des Champs-Elysées, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Washington, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul and Istanbul, and major tours of Australia and the UK.

Born in Montenegro in 1983, Miloš Karadaglić grew up against the background of the Balkan civil war. He began learning the guitar at the age of eight and quickly rose to national prominence before winning a scholarship to London’s Royal Academy of Music at the age of 16. He has been the recipient of many prizes, including the Julian Bream Prize, the Prince’s Prize and the Ivor Mairants Guitar Award. He is a Patron of the Mayor of London’s Fund for Young Musicians. Miloš uses D'Addario J 46 strings and a 2007 guitar by Greg Smallman, kindly lent to him by Paul and Jenny Gillham.

As the city’s largest and busiest musical organisation, the Hong Kong Philharmonic is a vital part of Hong Kong’s cultural life. In 2013/14 the HK Phil will celebrate its 40th professional season, but its roots stretch back well over a century. The HK Phil has now evolved into an orchestral powerhouse of the region, and an acclaimed cultural centrepiece of Asia’s World City.

The HK Phil is founded on the belief that a great city deserves a great orchestra. Annually it presents over 150 concerts for 200,000 music lovers. Featuring an enviable roster of international and local artists, with many concerts presented free, among them the annual Swire Symphony Under The Stars. Through its acclaimed education programme, over 40,000 young people learned about orchestral music last year.

The HK Phil’s members come from every corner of the globe, joining its strong core of Hong Kong musicians. In September 2012, Jaap van Zweden became the orchestra’s Music Director. Future years will see an ambitious series of new projects, with major international tours, renewed local partnerships, and large-scale concert events.
