C.C. Chiu Memorial Fund supports Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra Musician’s Chair Endowment Fund for Cellist, Anna Kwan Ton-an

[Hong Kong, 13 January, 2010] – The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra is proud to announce that the C.C. Chiu Memorial Fund has committed a three- year Musician’s Chair Endowment Fund for cellist, Anna Kwan Ton-an commencing 2009/10 to 2011/12 season.

A member of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra since 2001, Anna Kwan began studying cello at age 10, soon became a junior cello student at the APA and obtained her Bachelor of Music Degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and her Masters Degree from the Yale University, both on scholarships.  A devoted chamber musician, Kwan has studied with leading chamber music players including members of the Vermeer, Emerson, St. Peterburg and Colorado String Quartets.

“I am very honoured to be the recipient of this chair endowment.  And I hope this form of support of the musicians, which has had a long history in the U.S. and other parts of the world, will become more common in Hong Kong as it’s an affirmation of the great progress the Orchestra as a whole has made,” said Kwan of her Musician’s Chair Endowment Fund.

Endowing an artist’s chair is a unique way to forge a deeper connection with the Orchestra and its players.  The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra’s Chair Endowment Fund is set up with the objectives to give recognition to our musician and to provide a gateway for the wider public, may it be corporate or individual sponsors, to build a meaningful and insightful relationship with our musicians.  The support is also paramount to the future development of the HKPO, realizing the vision of Maestro Edo de Waart for it to become a leading orchestra in Asia.
