Edo de Waart to replace James Levine in Rosenkavalier
at the Metropolitan Opera in New York
with Renée Fleming

[Hong Kong 5 October 2009] Maestro Edo de Waart, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) has agreed to step in for the ailing Metropolitan Opera Music Director James Levine , to conduct Der Rosenkavalier on 13, 16 and 19 October, featuring Renée Fleming as Marschallin and Susan Graham as Octavian. Currently conducting the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, for which he is the new Music Director since September, De Waart will jet back and forth between Milwaukee and New York.

“It’s the third time in the last 11 years I have conducted at the Met, the most important opera house in the world, and It’s always a great pleasure and honor, especially when the production involves such friends and illuminati as Renée. It’s going to a hectic fortnight but I look forward to take the podium in New York very much.”

As an acclaimed opera conductor, Edo de Waart [Full biography] has enjoyed success in many of the great opera houses of the world, including Covent Garden, Bayreuth and Bastille. He has led highly regarded Wagner Ring Cycles in San Francisco and Sydney. He made his Met début in 1998 conducting performances of Mozart’s The Magic Flute and returned in the following season to lead performances of The Marriage of Figaro, also written by Mozart.

It should also be noted that Kristinn Sigmundsson, who sings Baron Ochs in the upcoming Met production, will visit Hong Kong in May 2010 in the performances of Beethoven’s Fidelio opera-in-concert with the HKPO under the baton of Edo de Waart. Der Rosenkavalier will also precede de Waart’s next great concerts with the HKPO in Mahler’s The Song of the Earth on 3 & 4 December.
