HKPO invites David Zinman as Guest Conductor this week

22 January 2009

Hong Kong, 22 January 2009 – This week, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (“The HKPO”) welcomes as its guest conductor David Zinman, the Chief Conductor of the Tonhalle Orchestra, Zurich, Artistic Director of the famed Aspen Music Festival and one of the most sought after conductors in the world today.

The HKPO will perform great pieces by three composers closely identified with Vienna: Webern’s Passacaglia, Mahler’s Symphony No. 10 – adagio and Richard Strauss’ Thus Spake Zarathustra on 23 and 24 January at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall.

Vienna at the turn of the 20th Century was the undisputed musical capital of Europe, home to the dazzling orchestral virtuoso Richard Strauss, the searching and confessional Gustav Mahler and a radical new school of composers, such as Anton Webern, who were about to shake music to its foundations.
