Another HKPO Sold-out Concert
Bel Canto – Sumi Jo in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, 12th November 2008 - The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) will perform, yet another sold-out concert this time under the baton of guest conductor Luciano Acocella together with a great Korean soprano Sumi Jo on 15th November. Renowned for the remarkable agility, precision and warmth of her voice, Sumi Jo will perform arias from the great bel canto tradition in an evening of spectacular vocal fireworks and show-stopping scenes from the world of opera.

Sumi Jo currently has over 50 recordings to her credit, which include ten solo albums for Erato. Among her operatic engagements in most recent seasons have been new productions of Les Contes d'Hoffmann(an opera she recorded under Kent Nagano) at the Washington Opera, The Paris Opera, the Los Angeles Opera, the Orange Opera Festival and the Royal Opera House. Sumi Jo has won many prestigious awards including first prizes at international competitions in Seoul, Naples, Enna, Barcelona and Pretoria. She was elected as “Artist for Peace” of UNESCO in 2003. She currently makes her home in Rome.

Luciano Acocella studied the piano, composition and conducting at the Conservatory of the Santa Cecilia in Rome. After winning the prize at the 1996 Prokofiev Conducting Competition and the Mitropoulous Competition for Conductors, he began conducting concerts and opera in Italy, Holland, France, China, Denmark, Japan, Korea, Russia, Poland and Romania. Luciano Acocella’s recordings include I Capuleti e i Montecchi on DVD/CD for Dynamic Records and he is due to record a CD of Puccini arias with soprano Melanie Diener and the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.
