"HKPO + Leehom" Concert

7 November 2008

Hong Kong, 7 November 2008 –Wang Leehom, an icon of Asia’s pop music scene, will add a new dimension to his career in December when he performs with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

The Hong Kong Philharmonic will present “HKPO + Leehom” as the climax of its celebrated series of collaborations with Chinese pop artists over the last 10 years.

In his diverse music career, the classically trained Leehom has impressed fans all over the world with his exceptional versatility playing many different instruments, as well as for this singing, composing, producing and his poetic lyrics. His previous musical collaborations have included such world-renowned musicians as Kenny G, Toni Bennett and Gackt.

Leehom’s musical idol since his student days has been the legendary American conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein. Edo de Waart, the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the HKPO started his career as Bernstein’s assistant at the New York Philharmonic and shares with Leehom a profound admiration for this towering figure in music history.

For this unique collaboration with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Leehom will take up the baton from Maestro de Waart and conduct the Orchestra as well as singing many of his hit songs and playing solo with full symphonic backing, all in the “unplugged” acoustic atmosphere of the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

Receiving the Maestro’s baton at today’s press conference, Leehom commented that conducting a first class orchestra like the Hong Kong Philharmonic would be a dream come true. “In my music, I have explored many different influences, from rock, rap and R&B to traditional music from ethnic communities in China. Bringing these experiences into a symphonic concert fill me with great excitement.”
