Trey Lee and HKPO celebrate
China National Day with Music

25 September 2008

Hong Kong, 25 September 2008 – Hong Kong-born young cellist Trey Lee, who has been enjoying a successful international career, returns again to the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) to celebrate the National Day in Trey Lee + HKPO: A China National Day Celebration on 3 & 4 October 2008, with the guest conductor Paul Daniel.

Following his memorable performances of Elgar’s concerto with the HKPO in 2006, this time Lee will bring a variety of repertoire to the audience of Hong Kong, ranging from Tchaikovsky’s classicism to Chou Wen-chung’s contemporary classical music. Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations look back to the golden age of classicism while Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra takes its theme from the 17th Century British composer Henry Purcell. Elgar’s variations are based on a mystery theme which he used as the basis for a series of touching, intimate and playful portraits of his close circle of friends. And Landscapes, Chou Wen-chung's earliest work for orchestra, is often cited as “bridging the gap between Oriental and Occidental with exceptional success”.

Hailed as one of the most exciting young artists of our time, Trey Lee has been making a sensation around the world in appearances with orchestras across continents, major concert halls and festivals such as The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Moscow’s Kremlin, Madrid’s Auditorio Nacional de Música, Helsinki’s Finlandia Hall, Geneva's Bâtiment des Forces Motrices, Forbidden City Concert Hall Beijing, Zagreb’s Vatroslav Lisinski, Marlboro Music Festival and Dubrovnik Summer Festival. In July 2007, he was invited by the Hong Kong SAR government to perform at its historic 10th Anniversary of Reunification with China with the China National Philharmonic.

Lee was the winner of the 2004 International Antonio Janigro Cello Competition as well as major prize-winner of New York’s Naumburg International Cello Competition, Helsinki’s International Paulo Cello Competition, and the Geneva International Music Competition. He has been featured by major television networks including CNN, Finnish Television, and Moscow Television. In addition, he was presented in the acclaimed “Music Life” documentary series produced by China Central Television (CCTV) and “Outstanding Young Chinese Musicians” documentary series produced by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK).

Joining Lee and the HKPO in this performance will be the world renowned conductor Paul Daniel. Daniel has appeared as a guest conductor with major orchestras throughout the world, including the Philharmonia, London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Symphony Orchestra (including at the internationally televised Last Night of the Proms in 2005), Orchestre de Paris, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with whom he has recorded Elijah for Decca and toured to New York.

Paul Daniel will take up the position of Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in Perth in 2009 and was Music Director of English National Opera from 1997 to 2005. During 1998-1999, Daniel received an Olivier Award for outstanding achievement in opera and a Gramophone Award for his English music series on the Naxos label. He was awarded the CBE in the 2000 New Year’s Honours list.

The opening performance on October 3 is sponsored by Sunwah Group. HKPO musicians will share their insights on the programme during the concerts.
