57% increase in Advance Subscriptions to HKPO’s Upcoming 2008/09 Season

10 July 2008

Hong Kong, 10 July 2008 – The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) today announced some outstanding results of advance subscriptions to the upcoming 2008/09 season. The total sales turnover of tickets sold and the number of subscribers have increased by 57% and 34% respectively, compared to last season. The number of subscribers has almost tripled since Edo de Waart’s first season in 2004/05.

For the 2007/08 season which ended with a resounding note of The Leningrad Symphony on 4 & 5 July, the average paid attendance was 88%, up from 82% from the previous season.

“At a time when almost every other orchestra in the world is experiencing a steady decline in subscribers, we are going against the trend. This impressive growth in audience numbers has exceeded our expectations and shows that the Hong Kong community recognizes and supports the achievements of our Orchestra under Edo de Waart’s direction,” said Timothy Calnin, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Philharmonic. “Over the last few years, we have been listening to our audience, trying to understand what sort of programming will inspire people in Hong Kong, while challenging our musicians and always maintaining a commitment to the pursuit of excellence.”

Yo-Yo Ma and the HKPO, Yundi Li’s Ravel and Yundi Li in Recital are among the best selling concerts so far in the 2008/09 season.

The stellar line-up of the new season range from such international stars as cellist Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Yundi Li, soprano Sumi Jo, pianists the Lebèque sisters, violinist Viktoria Mullova; to collaborations with Hong Kong and Chinese artists, cellist Trey Lee, pianists John Chen, Colleen Lee, Sa Chen, brothers Lio Kuok-wai and Lio Kuok-man, horn player Lin Jiang,  violinist Dan Zhu, tenor Wei Song, suona player Guo Yazhi, conductors Lan Shui, Zhang Guoyong, En Shao, Lü Jia and Zhang Xian, to popular concerts Bravo Broadway Rocks! at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.
