Swire Symphony under the Stars

2 November 2007

Hong Kong, 2 November 2007– On 1 December last year, 20,000 audience members witnessed the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO)’s Symphony under the Stars – the largest outdoor symphonic concert in this city – and all free tickets were given out in three days! This year, on Friday at 7pm on 30 November, HKPO will move to the Happy Valley Racecourse Recreation Ground for another magnificent musical evening under the magical night sky. So, register early this year on HKPO’s official website from 9am on 9 November (Friday) or go to a Tom Lee Music store to get your free ticket to the show! Full details can be found on Swire Symphony under the Stars is titled sponsored by Swire, and is a programme in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Under the baton of Conductor Laureate David Atherton, the Hong Kong Philharmonic will play a range of easy-listening Western and Chinese classical hits, including excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s beloved ballet music, The Nutcracker, Handel’s Royal Fireworks Music (alledgely attracting an audience of 12,000 at its premiere and causing a three-hour traffic jam on the London bridge) and Hua Yan-jun’s Moon Reflection in the Er Quan. Chinese pianist Zuo Zhang will also share the stage with the HKPO in Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, a romantic classic made timeless by the movie Somewhere in time. TV celebrity Patrick Dunn will again take to the stage to be master of ceremony for this special event.

Born in Shenzhen, China, 19-year-old Zuo Zhang started to learn the piano at the age of five in Germany. She returned to China in 1995 and continued her piano studies under the tutelage of Professor Dan Zhao Yi. Last year, she was awarded a full scholarship to continue her studies at the coveted Eastman School of Music. Ms Zhang has won many competitions and performances in China and abroad including the first prize in the American Gina Bachauer International Young Artists Piano Competition, the Ukraine Krainev International Piano Competition for young pianists and First Prize at the 1st International Piano Concerto Competition in China in 2006.

HKPO’s Conductor Laureate David Atherton, OBE, co-founded the London Sinfonietta and launched the Mostly Mozart Festival in America. He has also conducted the English National Opera, Canadian Opera and Glyndebourne Festival Opera, and frequently appears at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. His award-winning recordings include Tippett’s opera King Priam, a recipient of the coveted International Record Critics’ Award. Tippett praised Atherton as “a conductor of genius”. From 1989 he was Music Director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. On his retirement from this position in 2000 and in recognition of his services to the music of Hong Kong, Maestro Atherton was awarded the OBE and made the orchestra’s Conductor Laureate.
