Over 20% Growth in Advance Subscriptions to HKPO’s Upcoming 2007/08 Season

23 July 2007

Hong Kong, 23 July 2007– The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO), "one of the top orchestras in Asia", is proud to announce some fantastic results of advance subscriptions to the upcoming 2007/08 season. The total sales turnover and the number of tickets sold have both increased by over 20%, compared to last season.

"We are very pleased with the double digit results of our subscription campaign for the new season, which is a strong early indicator of the public's reaction to our 2007/08 programs. In the last three years, our subscriber numbers have more than doubled and single ticket sales have increased dramatically since Edo de Waart became Artistic Director in 2004," said Timothy Calnin, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Philharmonic. "Unwavering commitment to the pursuit of excellence, continuous review of our programming and marketing strategies and sheer hard work, both on stage and behind the scenes, have contributed to this achievement."

Deeper analysis of the subscription results indicates that this year's opera-in-concert, Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier is the best selling concert so far.

Box office is now open for the first concerts of the 2007/08 season, Swire New Generation Series - Beethoven + 5 Pianists, at all URBTIX outlets. The stellar line-up of the season range from such international stars as soprano Dagmar Schellenberger, mezzo-soprano Michelle Breedt, baritone Wolfgang Holzmair and bass Franz Hawlata (all in the Season Opening Gala, Der Rosenkavalier in concert), violinist Midori, flautist Emmanuel Pahud and pianist Yundi Li; to collaborations with local established and aspiring young artists, huqin player Wong On-yuen, tenor Warren Mok, violinist Li Chuanyun and pianist Aristo Sham; and, at the opposite end of the spectrum, to a tribute to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Hailed as “one of Asia's top orchestras”, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) is one of the leading orchestras in the region, led by the internationally renowned Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Edo de Waart. Enriching Hong Kong’s cultural life for over a century, the Orchestra has grown into a formidable ensemble of Chinese and international talents in the last three decades, attracting world-class artists to perform on the same stage. HKPO annually touches the lives of nearly 200,000 music lovers through more than 150 performances, including a series of outreach activities such as the free outdoor concert Symphony under the Stars which attracted nearly 20,000 people this season.
