Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra presents Swire Classic Insights: Adult Education Concert

4 June 2007

Hong Kong 4 June 2007 – The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) will present a free admission Swire Classic Insights: Adult Education Concert on 14 June 2007 (Thursday), 7.30pm, at the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall. Prof Lo King-man will introduce, in Cantonese, Richard Strauss’s best loved opera, Der Rosenkavalier, which will open the Hong Kong Philharmonic’s 2007/08 season, followed by the performance of Der Rosenkavalier suite, conducted by Edo de Waart. Admission is free. To register, send an e-mail to stating name, contact telephone number, and the number of tickets requested by 11 June.

Swire Classic Insights: Adult Education Concert is a series of free concerts designed for adults and young people, aged 15 years and over, who are interested in learning more about symphonic music. Each programme in the series will help one get inside the music to gain a deeper understanding of the composer’s creative process. With a 30-minute introduction, illustrated with musical examples played by the Hong Kong Philharmonic, a major symphonic work is deconstructed to offer fascinating insights into the art of composition and the skill of orchestration. This introduction is followed by a complete performance of the symphony. Feedback from previous concerts had been overwhelmingly positive, when we presented Beethoven’s Symphony No.2 and Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, featuring speakers: Timothy Calnin, HKPO’s Chief Executive (in English), Leung Kin-fung, HKPO’s Swire First Associate Concertmaster (in Cantonese) and Henry Shek (conductor and speaker in Cantonese).

The Hong Kong Philharmonic will open the 2007/08 season with opera-in-concert performances of Richard Strauss’s most popular and successful opera, Der Rosenkavalier. Set in mid-18th century Vienna, Der Rosenkavalier centres around the shifting romantic attachments of four principal characters: the Marschallin (a noblewoman whose visual charms are quickly succumbing to the aging process), Octavian (a handsome young man with an eye for a beautiful woman), Baron Ochs von Lerchenau (the Marschallin’s bumbling and foolish cousin) and Sophie (to whom Baron Ochs is engaged). The orchestral suite strings together the finest melodies and highlights from this fantastic opera.

Lo King-man was educated at the University of Hong Kong. He undertook further studies and training on scholarship in Rome. After several decades working in an academic environment and concurrently developing a successful creative career as author, designer and director for over a hundred productions for the stage including drama, dance and opera, Lo King-man accepted appointment as Director of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, a position he held until 2004. He is currently Principal of the Canton International Summer Music Academy of China, and a regular presenter of opera programmes on Radio Hong Kong.

Edo de Waart is Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He appears regularly with the world’s leading symphony orchestras and finest musicians and has enjoyed success in the major opera houses. As an opera conductor, Edo de Waart has conducted in Covent Garden and Bayreuth, and has led highly regarded Wagner Ring Cycles in San Francisco and Sydney. In the past seasons, Edo de Waart has conducted Strauss’s Salome, Elektra and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly operas-in-concert with HKPO to critical acclaim.
