Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra presents Award-winning Cellist Trey Lee

Hong Kong, 23 November 2006 – The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) will present the award-winning Chinese cellist Trey Lee in the first of this season's line-up of outstanding young Chinese artists in 'A Swire New Generation Concert: Sounds of Nature' on 8 and 9 December 2006. Trey Lee will be the soloist in Elgar's heart-rending Cello Concerto in a programme that also includes Beethoven's Pastorale Symphony and Rautavaara's nature-invoking Cantus Arcticus, concerto for birds and orchestra. On the podium will be distinguished Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä, 2004 Musical America Conductor of the Year Award winner and currently Music Director of both the Minnesota Orchestra and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. RTHK Radio 4's Kathy Lam and Ben Pelletier will be narrators at the concerts in Cantonese on Friday and in English on Saturday respectively.

Trey Lee is one of the most compelling young artists of our time, having garnered wide attention for his playing that combines intellectual sophistication with emotional sensitivity. Winner of the 2004 International Antonio Janigro Cello Competition as well as prize-winner of New York's Naumburg International Cello Competition, Helsinki's International Paulo Cello Competition and the 55th Geneva International Music Competition. Trey was awarded 'Leader of the Year', presented by maestro Edo de Waart, by the Asian media conglomerate Sing Tao Media Group and was also one of eight artists featured in the acclaimed Outstanding Young Chinese Musicians documentary series produced by Radio Television Hong Kong.

Osmo Vänskä is currently the Minnesota Orchestra's Music Director as well as Music Director of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra in Finland. He was until July 2002 Chief Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Glasgow. Internationally in demand as a guest conductor, Vänskä's orchestra invitations in the next two seasons include some of US's most prestigious ensembles - the San Francisco Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Cleveland Orchestra. In Europe he looks forward to projects with such orchestras as the London Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, and invitations with the Sydney Symphony and Tokyo's Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra. Amongst the many honours and distinctions he has been awarded are a Royal Philharmonic Society Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to classical music during 2001; and in December 2004, Musical America's Conductor of the Year Award.

Einojuhani Rautaava's Cantus Arcticus, concerto for birds and orchestra "has been described as one of the best-known and best-loved pieces of contemporary Finnish music"
. Genuine bird-calls, mostly recorded in the vicinity of Oulu, Finland, are interwoven with orchestral textures in the three movements respectively entitled as The Bog, Melancholy and Swans Migrating.
