Hong Kong Philharmonic and Local Culture Icon Anthony Wong


Hong Kong, 18 Jan 2006 – Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) announced today Chinese pop singer/songwriter Anthony Wong Yiu-ming as the featured star in its annual Canto-pop concert, after both popular and acclaimed collaborations with pop artists such as Sally Yeh, Sandy Lam, Jacky Cheung, Alan Tam, and Hacken Lee in previous years. Entitled HKPO VS Anthony Wong LIVE – Bauhinian Rhapsody, the series of three concerts is expected to be a dazzling collaboration where classical and electronic music interact. The concerts will take place on 10, 11, and 12 March 2006 (Fri, Sat & Sun) at 8:15pm in the Hong Kong Coliseum.

To announce the collaboration, Anthony Wong appeared in HKPO's press conference in the afternoon of 18 January in Lan Kwai Fong. “I have always hoped to work with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, so this is like a dream come true. A lot of my works are quite glamorous and have an orchestral dimension to it, so I think this collaboration would be both spectacular and original, “ said Anthony Wong at the event.

The concerts also feature Australian conductor Simon Kenway, one of the Music Directors for Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge , Gaybird Leung Kei-cheuk, star production/composer of hip production company People Mountain People Sea , as well as Chiu Tsang-hei, renowned producer, composer, arranger, and music director in Hong Kong's entertainment industry. Experimental theatre group Zuni Icosahedron's Mathias Woo Yan-wai will join the team as the stage director.

The concert title, Bauhinian Rhapsody , reflects the concerts' intention to pay tribute to the best of Hong Kong's pop music scene. A series of works by legendary Hong Kong composer Joseph Koo Ka-fai, for instance, will be performed at the concerts. Another feature of the concerts is the chemistry between classical and electronic music, which in this concert will at times be blended and at times allowed to clash and create unexpected sparks.

Simon Kenway is an established and highly regarded conductor, having held posts as Principal Chorus Master of Opera Australia, Musical Director for Opera in the Vineyards, Opera by George and Opera Under the Stars in Broome, and Conductor and Chief Vocal Coach for the Sydney Conservatorium Opera School. He also composes and arranges scores for plays and incidental music. H is many projects include serving as Musical Director for the first working draft of the movie Moulin Rouge . He was recently appointed as the Chorus Master of the HKPO Chorus.

A g raduate from the Music Department of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, award-winning composer Gaybird is renowned for his diverse scope of music creation, including performances in the Hong Kong Arts Festival and Zuni Icosahedron. He has also collaborated with pop stars including Anthony Wong, Jay Lam, Eason Chan, and Anita Mui.
