UK’s Violin Duo Sensation LIVE in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, 26 October 2005 – The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) will collaborate with DUEL, the violin duo sensation whose debut album topped the UK classical album chart for 5 weeks. Over ten classical favourites will be performed at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on 5 and 6 November, under the baton of HKPO Resident Conductor Harmen Cnossen.

Greg Scott and Craig Owen, better known as DUEL, busked across northern England while they studied in Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music. The violin duo attracted large crowds as well as the attention of Pete Waterman, the pop music svengali who launched Kylie Minogue. Waterman and his new protégé proceeded to find a way to showcase the qualities of classical music to a broad popular audience, with an emphasis on irresistible tunes and a dynamic performing style.

A record deal with Decca soon followed, and their debut album DUEL topped the UK classical album chart for 5 weeks. Since then they have performed in concerts all over the world, with Atomic Kitten, Bryan Ferry, Joss Stone, Sir Cliff Richard and k.d.lang. Earlier this year DUEL performed at The Royal Albert Hall in London with the English Chamber Orchestra in a concert for the Tsunami appeal and most recently performed at the Last Night of the Classical Proms. In 2006 DUEL have been invited to perform a special version of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons‚ at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Their upcoming concert with HKPO has a programme of over 10 violin and orchestral favourites, with a classical start with Rossini’s William Tell Oveture and Bach’s Double Violin Concerto. Following the two longer works is a collection of melodious pieces, including Saint-Saens’ Danse Macabre, Ungar’s Ashokan Farewell, Sakamoto’s Theme from Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5, Piazzolla’s Libertango, and Craig Owen’s own composition - Song for Hong Kong. Renowned music arranger Peter Tomasso, who has worked with such celebrities as Michael Jackson, has arranged the music for DUEL in the upcoming concerts. DUEL will even introduce their music from the stage!

Dutch conductor Harmen Cnossen was the asistant conductors of the China National Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, as well as the Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra. In 2002, he made his first Chinese recording with the China National Opera and Ballet Orchestra Beijing. Other engagements in Europe include the Orchestra of the Karajan Akademie of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bulgarian State Opera. Harmen Cnossen was awarded a Conducting Fellowship by HKPO in 2004 and is currently its Resident Conductor. Highlights with the Orchestra included concerts with Laura Fygi in 2005 and a series of very successful lunchtime concerts at the AIG tower in Hong Kong.

Peter Tomasso has written for and conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Count Basie Orchestra to name but a few. As well as CD recordings, film recordings and television performances worldwide, Peter has performed in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. Some of the many personalities Peter has worked with are Michael Jackson, Dean Martin, Engelbert Humperdink, Whitney Houston and Shirley Bassey.
