Mozart in the City Series Continues 18th Century Music Tour

Hong Kong, 11 May 2005 – The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) presents the third and fourth programmes of Mozart in the City, the concert series that showcases the works of Mozart and his contemporaries from the 18th Century. The upcoming concerts also continue to combine wine, dinning and music with a special offer at Lan Kwai Fong, but add to the unique experience with a music therapy talk at the end of the series. The third programme, Mozart in Prague, features renowned English pianist Imogen Cooper while the fourth, Cathay Pacific Discovery Series - Haydn, Mozart & Beethoven, brings violinist and director Kolja Blacher to Hong Kong. The two programmes are scheduled to take place in the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall, in May and June respectively.

On 20 and 21 May (Fri & Sat) at 8pm is Mozart in Prague, to be conducted by HKPO Conductor Laureate David Atherton. Critically acclaimed pianist Imogen Cooper, known for her distinctive style and poetic poise, will perform as the soloist in two beloved concertos - Mozart’s Piano Concerto in E-flat,
K. 449 and Haydn’s Piano Concerto in D. Also on the programme are Haydn’s L’isola disabitata overture, and the Prague Symphony with which Mozart entered his most mature phase as a composer of symphonies.

The next programme, Cathay Pacific Discovery Series - Haydn, Mozart & Beethoven, presents four works by three giants in the classical period – Beethoven’s Romance in G, Mozart’s Violin Concerto No.4, Beethoven’s Romance in F, and Haydn’s Symphony No.104 London. German violinist and conductor Kolja Blacher, a former Berlin Philharmonic concertmaster who has now embarked an impressive solo career worldwide, will direct from his violin to showcase the four masterpieces, three of which also star him as the solo violinist. The concerts will be held on 17 and 18 June (Fri & Sat) at 8pm. Ticket holders to these concerts are also entitled to a pre-concert talk (in Cantonese) on music therapy by Board Certified Music Therapist Joanna Chan.

Recognised worldwide as a pianist of virtuosity and poetic poise, Imogen Cooper has established a reputation as one of the finest interpreters of the classical repertoire. She has and continues to play with all the major British orchestras, in addition to performing extensively worldwide. “Cooper’s notes emerged … like a thread of rosy seed-pearls: clean, cool, unique and sweet. (Her performance) transfixed both audience and orchestra: vivacious, dynamic, organic, flexible and … genuinely suspenseful,” praised The Independent.

German violinist and conductor Kolja Blacher was First Concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic throughout the 1990s before his parallel careers as soloist and conductor took him away from Berlin and onto the major platforms of the musical world. “…the quietly assertive nature of his line and the unflappable equanimity of his production style made this an engrossing, glowing performance, “ commented Melbourne newspaper The Age on Blacher’s performances of Mozart Violin Concertos.
