HKPO to Appear with Top UK Choir in Christmas Concerts

Hong Kong, 29 Nov 2004 - Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) presents Christmas with the Philharmonic, featuring the internationally-renowned choir from Winchester College, one of the oldest in the United Kingdom. The programme is a mix of festive Christmas carols and gems from  the 16th and 17th century, such as Handel's Hallelujah chorus and Bach's Jesu, Joy of man's desiring, and Corelli's famous "Christmas Concerto". Conducted by William Lacey, also featuring Soprano Sara Macliver, the two performances will be held on 22 & 23 December (Wed & Thu) at 7:30pm in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall.

Founded in 1382 by William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester and twice Chancellor of England, Winchester College is one of the best-known schools in Great Britain. For six hundred years, the College has maintained its Quiristers, sixteen singing-boys who form the treble line in the Winchester College Chapel Choir. The Choir sings a full range of choral services in the College Chapel. It gives recitals, broadcasts and records for BBC Radio and Television, and makes regular tours abroad. The Choir has recently performed at St John's Smith Square in central London, while the Quiristers have appeared in the BBC Proms at the Albert Hall. Foreign trips since 2000 have included Canada, the Czech Republic and Germany. A new CD of favourite anthems, Hear My Prayer, has just been released. Christopher Tolley has been Director of Chapel Music at Winchester College since 1992.

The programme contains a variety of festive music, from the timeless Christmas carols to classy orchestral and vocal favourites from the 17th century. Some of such includes Handel's Hallelujah chorus and other highlights from Messiah, Bach's Jesu, Joy of man's desiring and other Cantatas excerpts, Corelli's Concerto Grosso Op.6 No.8 [Christmas Concerto]. Also on the programme are four a cappella pieces, Bach's Lutheran Mass, Handel's Concerto Grosso and Christmas carols such as Joy to the World and O come, all ye faithful.
